Buyer Due Diligence

How to Record Vehicle Undercarriage Condition Before Export

7 min read

The underside can reveal damage, corrosion, leaks and repairs that are not visible in normal listing photographs. Buyers should define an inspection scope rather than relying on a few low-angle images.

Use safe professional access

Ask an independent qualified inspector or appropriate facility to view the underside using suitable equipment and procedures. Do not crawl beneath an unsupported vehicle or improvise lifting arrangements.

Agree the inspection scope, access and limitations before the visit. A seller’s photograph can guide questions but does not replace safe physical inspection.

Connect evidence to the exact vehicle

Record the vehicle identifier, listing reference, date and inspector details with the images or report. Ask for an ordered sequence covering front, centre, rear and both sides.

Preserve original files where possible. A close-up without location context may be difficult to interpret or connect to the vehicle.

Ask about corrosion and previous repairs

Request observations on visible corrosion, coatings, welds, deformation, replaced panels and repair evidence. Ask the inspector to separate observations from conclusions.

Surface appearance alone does not establish structural condition or repair quality. Significant findings require appropriate specialist assessment.

Record leaks, guards and attachments

Include visible fluid residue, damaged covers, loose guards, exhaust condition and accessible mounting points within the agreed scope. A dry photograph at one moment does not guarantee the absence of a leak.

Check whether modifications or missing parts require further technical verification for the exact model and destination.

Compare with documents and history

Compare underbody findings with available inspection, service, repair and incident records. Record inconsistencies and request evidence instead of guessing their cause.

Use lawful authorised history sources for the relevant jurisdiction. One report does not guarantee complete coverage.

Recheck at handover

Record material changes between inspection and collection, particularly after repairs, storage or inland transport. Include agreed remedial work and responsibility in the written transaction record.
