Buyer Due Diligence

How to Document Vehicle Mileage Before an Export Purchase

7 min read

Mileage can influence a buyer's assessment of use and value, but a dashboard photograph is only one piece of evidence. Record the current reading, compare available history and investigate inconsistencies before committing to an international purchase.

Request a current dashboard record

Ask for a clear, dated photograph or video showing the mileage display, warning lights and enough of the interior to connect the evidence to the vehicle. Confirm whether the display uses miles or kilometres.

A current image does not establish that the reading is accurate or complete. Preserve the original file and the seller's written explanation.

Match the evidence to the vehicle

Compare the vehicle identification number, registration or other permitted identifiers across the listing, inspection and records. Avoid accepting mileage evidence that cannot be reliably connected to the vehicle being offered.

Protect personal information and use only lawful, authorised history sources for the relevant market.

Compare available historical records

Review service, inspection and ownership records where legitimately available, noting each date and reading. Look for a logical sequence rather than relying on one document.

Record gaps and differences instead of guessing their cause. A unit change, replacement instrument cluster, data error or other event may require further evidence.

Ask an independent inspector to confirm

Include the displayed reading, warning lights, vehicle identity and any apparent inconsistency in a pre-purchase inspection brief. The inspector should report observations without guaranteeing an undocumented history.

Inspection scope, access and limitations should be agreed directly before the visit.

Keep mileage within the wider decision

Assess condition, identity, documentation, seller verification and transaction terms alongside mileage. Pause when evidence conflicts or pressure is applied to pay before questions are resolved.

Global Auto Export supports marketplace discovery and due-diligence communication, but it does not guarantee mileage, history, seller performance, customs clearance or delivery.
